The method that's helped thousands in the U.S. and Japan learn Japanese successfully. The Japanese language has two basic writing systems, hiragana, and katakana, in addition to the one that uses Chinese characters or Kanji. This handy book teaches you a new mnemonic–based method to read and write the fundamental 92 hiragana and katakana characters. Along with its sister book: Japanese Kanji for Beginners it provides a complete introduction to written Japanese. Memorable picture mnemonics help you to learn the characters by associating their shapes and sounds with combinations of images and English words already familiar to you. Clear examples and engaging exercises offer opportunities to read, write, use and practice all 92 primary hiragana katakana characters, plus the remaining kana that stand for more complex sounds. Polish your knowledge with word searches, crossword puzzles, fill–in–the–blanks, timed recognition quizzes, and other engaging activities. The CD–ROM allows you to print out flashcards (featuring the same mnemonic images taught in the book) to help you review and practice, even while you are on the go.

YES! I absolutely LOVE this book. I initially bought the Japanese Living Language set (which is GREAT learning to speak the actual language) but it didn't offer nearly enough assistance in writing and understanding what I was writing in terms of the symbols. That is where this book came in and scored 5 stars! This book starts by explaining the basics in writing Japanese: Hiragana, Katakana, (and also briefly explaining Kanji) and the different uses of each. Then they are step by step instructions on HOW to write and very interesting but useful ways of how to remember the symbols. I could not believe how much those helped. For the long awaited question? Can you just go online and find videos and information for free similar to that provided in this book? Well, personally, I tried. I TRIED for a total of 3 months searching the internet far and wide and I can honestly say that this book helped me more in 3 WEEKS than those THREE months of trying free online resources. So yes, DEFINITELY WORTH THE MONEY. The CD was nothing so much to be excited about. My name wasn't in the "list of common names" ... which to be honest didn't surprise me as it is unique. And the "flash cards" were very difficult to print because the symbols and clues were on different pages so it required double sided printing and then information didn't always line up. However, I still rate the book for 5 stars because it REALLY helped me and I can now say that I can write and pronounce all 46 hiragana symbols.... in a VERY short time period. I can't wait to keep learning!!!
I love this book! Being a non-native speaker of Japanese, I lost my knowledge of how to read and write after not practising for so long. This book helped me so much. There's a practise page for each character/letter and a little mnemonic. It also shows you the correct strokes for each letter. If you're trying to learn Japanese, you need to pick up this book!
Timothy G. Stout. My compliments to you. It's the greatest work book I have seen for basic learning of Japanese alphabets.Highly recommend !
Considering how important stroke order and direction is, I was disappointed to find no explanation of the stroke order, direction, or type for tenten or maru. What I mean is: tenten consists of two marks, one closer to the rest of the character, and one farther away (let's call them inside and outside). Which stroke is made first, inside or outside? And are they stops going down and to the right, or brushes going up and to the left? I didn't want to proceed without knowing the correct way, because I don't want to pick up bad habits that will be harder to correct later. In the book's defense, almost all online resources omit the same info. It took me some time to find the answer. In case anyone else is wondering, both tenten marks are stops, both down and to the left, inside stroke first.I had similar questions about maru. Is the stroke clockwise or counter clockwise? And where does the stroke begin? Top of the circle, bottom, one of the sides, somewhere else? The same online resource informs me that the maru stroke is made counter-clockwise, starting from the top.Other than this one gripe (that is costing it a star), the book is great.
I learned how to write, speak, and read Japanese in High School using the same methods outlined in this book. We bought this for our 12 year old daughter because she is very interested in learning Japanese. The picture associations make learning the characters easier. Over 20 years later and not proacticing I can still remember how to write basic Japanese because I remember the associations that are also used in this book.
Love this book and the included CD. I used some high quality card stock for the flash cards and they turned out beautiful. Using this book I was astonished at how quickly I could learn the kana. I certainly would not have been so successful without the flash cards, which include the associated illustrations to help you remember the syllable they represent. This is a perfect starting point for learning Japanese!
where was this book twenty years ago. okay, i'm going to digress on this, so bear with me. Years ago-too many to count-i was told to don't even consider learning japanese since it's the "devil's tounge." why did i listen to those fools. i'm not saying it's easy esp when you've been out of school for how long???? but this book is a HUGE HELP, it makes sense of the writing system, and you actually learn things. oh my goodness, you actually learn from it. the author, Timothy G. Stout, does a pretty good job explaining the how and what in a cool way. So get it, and it will be a great help to use. it's useful, how novel is that? Wow!
I have been picking up a bit of Japanese as I deal with a lot of Japanese tourists. I was so overwhelmed when looking at Japanese and knowing that they have 2 grammar styles Hirgana & Katakana. Well was I in luck. I can't think of a better and detailed grammar book for picking up written Japanese. It includes cute graphics and practice squares so you can practice your writing and compare it to the correct version. There is also a CD included for more practice. I was amazed at how quickly I was able to start recognizing and reading Japanese words.Granted I sometimes don't know what they mean, but I can pronounce them. I impressed a lot of the Japanese tourists when I would take their tour guides and read words from them. I would also recommend downloading an app called Dr. Mokus Hiragana & Katakana. It's cartoon images presented in a fun immersive way. The repetition from that and the use of this book will have you recognizing all the Hiragana & Katakana characters quickly.
